Mochi Daifuku
The Story
Daifuku — 'great luck' in Japanese — has been offered at Shinto shrines and shared at New Year gatherings for centuries. The rhythmic pounding of mochi (mochitsuki) is a community ritual that binds generations together. Koko learned the technique from a pastry-maker in Kyoto whose family has made daifuku for five generations.
